Her clinical and research interests focus on maternal cardiac disease in pregnancy and fetal assessment, with expertise spanning basic science, translational research, and clinical outcomes.
Dr. Avitan's research journey began during her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency with molecular studies of ovarian cancer at Sheba Medical Center, followed by translational work on beta cell replication at Hebrew University. She has published on critical obstetric topics including major hemorrhage risk factors and perinatal outcomes in multifetal pregnancies. Her innovative fetal assessment research includes pioneering work on diurnal variations in fetal behavior, fetal urine production rates, and novel retinal biomarkers for preeclampsia outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration with ophthalmology colleagues.
Currently, Dr. Avitan leads a multidisciplinary cardiac pregnancy program at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, and her recent work leverages big data to identify risk factors for neonatal intensive care admission and childhood mortality in term infants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she contributed to innovations in medical education by developing online training models for obstetrics and gynecology students. Her research has been published in leading journals and reflects her commitment to improving maternal and fetal outcomes through collaborative, evidence-based approaches.
