Karla Martin, MD, is an OB/GYN resident physician in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at UT Health Houston and an aspiring maternal-fetal medicine fellow. She is originally from Mount Hermon, Louisiana, and her career goal is to integrate clinical care, research, and equity-focused leadership to improve maternal outcomes, particularly in underserved populations.
Dr. Martin earned her undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and her medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine. Her academic interests include maternal morbidity and mortality, high-risk pregnancy, and advancing equitable, evidence-based obstetric care. She has conducted maternal-fetal medicine–focused research on VBAC prediction modeling and risk stratification in placenta accreta spectrum, and her scholarly work also includes quality improvement initiatives and national and regional presentations addressing obstetric disparities, postpartum mental health, and access to reproductive care.
In addition to her academic work, Dr. Martin has demonstrated leadership through her service as an ACOG Program Representative and prior roles in equity-centered and public health initiatives. Through fellowship training, she seeks advanced expertise in complex obstetric care and clinically impactful research to further advance equitable maternal health outcomes.
