Dr. Haywood Brown is Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair Emeritus and Distinguished Endowed Professor at Duke University. He most recently served the Senior Associate Vice President and Vice Dean for USF Health and the Morsani College of Medicine.
He is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro receiving his Bachelor of Science in Professional Biology. He completed his Medical Degree at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Knoxville, Tennessee, followed by subspecialty fellowship training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine/Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He also holds an Executive Physician Leadership Certificate from Wharton School.
Dr. Brown has had a distinguished career as an academic leader in education, clinical care, and research for nearly four decades.
In 2017-2018, Dr. Brown served as the 68th President of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is also a Past President of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society and a former Obstetrics and Gynecology Section Chair for the National Medical Association.
Dr. Brown’s ACOG Presidency focused on disparity and women health equity and Re-defining the Postpartum Period: The Beginning of Lifelong Health. During his tenure as President, he advocated on Maternal Mortality Prevention and for establishment of nationwide State Maternal Mortality Reviews.
He is currently the Co-PI for the HRSA Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health Postpartum Community Care Initiative. He serves on several boards focusing on health equity including the Merck for Mothers Global Health Advisory Board.
