Julia Smeal, MD is a 4th year OB/GYN resident at Pennsylvania Hospital. She is from Brighton, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan where she earned her undergraduate degrees in actuarial mathematics and statistics. After working for a clinical psychology research lab during her gap years, she moved to Detroit where she earned her medical doctorate at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. While there, she was heavily involved with the admissions committee and volunteer work with survivors of sexual assault. She then moved to Philadelphia in 2022 for her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital where she developed interests in high-risk obstetrics and hospital policy. Following the completion of her residency, she will return to Michigan to start her career as an academic generalist practicing full-spectrum women's healthcare in Detroit.
