Johann Vargas-Calixto received a BSc in Mechatronics Engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima, Peru, 2015, a MEng in Biological and Biomedical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, 2019, and a PhD in Biological and Biomedical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, 2024.
Dr. Vargas-Calixto is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Emory University, Atlanta, GA. His research focuses on improving the detection of fetal and maternal complications of pregnancy with a especial focus on low-resource settings. More specifically, he works with artificial intelligence models that are trained on physiological signals such as fetal heart rate, uterine contractions, maternal heart rate, and maternal blood pressure and aim to identify preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and intrapartum hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy as early as possible. Moreover, these models must be able to work with low-cost technologies, such as 1D Doppler Ultrasound, for them to be useful in low-resource and rural environments.
