Dr. Hughes is the E.C. Hamblen Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University School of Medicine. She specializes in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Infectious Diseases. She is currently the Duke Center Principal Investigator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Maternal Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Clinical Trials Network, participating in all clinical trials run by the Network. She was the PI for two major randomized clinical trials aimed at prevention of congenital cytomegalovirus infection with funding from NICHD and CDC, respectively and has over 150 peer-reviewed publications. She has served on multiple committees and the Board of Directors for the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM). She is currently the Chair of the SMFM Infectious Diseases and Emerging Threats Committee and also serves on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist Committee for Immunization, Infectious Disease, and Public Health Preparedness. She has served on numerous study sections for NIH and CDC. She also served as Co-chair for the ACOG COVID task force, Chaired the SMFM COVID task force, and was the only obstetrician to have served on the NIH COVID treatment guidelines panel. She has been named a regional Castle Connolly Best Doctors in America.
