Akira M. Clemons, BS, is a Research Specialist II in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in pre-medicine and plans to attend medical school to become a physician dedicated to advancing maternal and reproductive health.
In her current role, Ms. Clemons is an integral member of Dr. Karen L. Florio’s research team, contributing to multiple clinical studies focused on improving outcomes for pregnant and postpartum individuals. Her responsibilities include protocol development, data management, survey coordination, and regulatory compliance. She plays a key role in the project Knowledge Gaps in Cardiovascular Maternal Mortality: A Regional Survey of Frontline Providers.
As a woman of color, Ms. Clemons is deeply committed to addressing disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality and to improving access to high-quality, equitable care for underserved populations. Guided by faith, compassion, and a spirit of service, she believes that medicine is both a science and a ministry—a means of strengthening the whole body of society by caring for its most vital parts. Her long-term goal is to integrate clinical research and patient care to ensure that every mother, regardless of circumstance, receives equitable, respectful, and life-affirming care.
