Dr. Jayakumar works at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, as a Scientist in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. He has been working on the cellular, molecular, and neuropathological aspects of severe, as well as chronic liver injury, acute and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, over the last 25 years, and viral pathogenesis, especially acute and long COVID. His research group has been fortunate to publish actively in the scientific literature for the past 25 years, and more recently on acute and long COVID and pregnancy complications.
Dr. Jayakumar recently reported acute COVID-19 symptoms, clinical status, weight loss, multi-organ pathological changes, and animal death in a murine hepatitis virus-1 (MHV-1) coronavirus mouse model of COVID-19, which were similar to those observed in humans with COVID-19. Dr. Jayakumar is actively investigating long-term sequelae of COVID-19 in mice.
Throughout his 25-year career, Dr. Jayakumar has received numerous prizes and awards. He is on the editorial boards of more than a dozen high-impact journals and serves on review committees at national institutes. His publications are highly cited and have a high impact. Most importantly, national institutes and foundation grants have markedly supported his research.
