This course is designed to bring together providers in maternal-fetal medicine interested in preventing maternal mortality to advance knowledge of existing trends/causes and approaches to improve identification of underlying causes and developing actionable recommendations to prevent maternal death. The course will highlight recommendations and will be anchored by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Position Statement: Maternal Mortality Review Committees (2025). Presentations will be by maternal fetal medicine specialists actively engaged in maternal mortality review and quality improvement. Presentations will be accentuated with the inclusion of case discussions, audience polling, and panel discussions.

Learning Objectives:

Understand contemporary trends and causes of maternal mortality in the United States.
Define core recommendations for state maternal mortality review committees.
Accurately define underlying cause of maternal death through multidisciplinary team case review.
Highlight the importance of evaluating maternal level of care designation as part of maternal mortality case review.
Identify available decision algorithms and tools to assist with accurately assigning underlying cause of maternal death.
Assess for bias and discrimination as contributing factors in cases of maternal death.
Appreciate the value of informant interviews in maternal mortality case review.
Advance maternal mortality review recommendations to actions at the patient, provider, facility, system and community level to prevent maternal mortality.
