Complications from complex cesraean deliveries are a source of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Many providers report feeling ill-equipped to handle high-acuity, high-stakes cases in the face of distorted anatomy, limited exposure to complex cases, and gaps in experience and training. This course will teach registrants how to troubleshoot complex cesarean delivery scenarios including: hemorrhage risk assessment and management, anatomic distortion due to adhesions, fibroids; provide a review of key pelvic anatomy (normal and pathologic); and identify strategies to approach team planning and the surgical approach for complex cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will identify strategies to identify patients at risk for complex cesarean delivery (CD) based on history and imaging.
  • Discuss evidence-based, stepwise approaches to managing hemorrhage, trauma, and surgical complications.
  • Identify anatomic distortions and describe techniques to perform safe surgical dissection to optimize surgical outcomes.
  • Utilize at least 2 resources provided during the course to aid surgical planning upon return to their home institution.
