(438) Enhanced Thematic Analysis of the Focus Group Discussion on Gestational Diabetes and Preeclampsia Postpartum

Objective:
To explore the postnatal follow-up experiences of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-eclampsia (PET), identify barriers to care, and gather insights to inform the development of more patient-centered and responsive postpartum follow-up models.

Study Design:
This qualitative study involved two online focus group discussions with 13 postpartum women previously enrolled in a structured follow-up program for GDM or PET. Participants were invited from a larger cohort of 185 women. A semi-structured discussion guide explored themes of awareness, emotional response, healthcare access, and service preferences. Sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework.

Results:
Participants reported limited knowledge of the long-term risks associated with GDM and PET. Emotional distress, lack of childcare, scheduling conflicts, and insufficient provider communication were cited as key barriers to follow-up. Many women prioritized newborn care over their own health. Nevertheless, participants valued health monitoring, appreciated being heard, and supported improvements such as flexible scheduling, early engagement, peer support, and integration of maternal and infant services. Suggestions included personalized health tracking and extending care beyond the traditional six-week postpartum period

Conclusion:
Postpartum women with GDM and PET face complex barriers to care. Addressing emotional, logistical, and informational gaps through patient-centered, integrated services may improve engagement and long-term outcomes. Findings inform the development of flexible follow-up models that align with women’s lived experiences and caregiving demands.
